Virginia Macnaughton

Virginia recorded her debut album The Music, while signed to a small independent label in London, 1995, produced by Phil Saatchi (Joan Armatrading, Pete Smith), and featuring string arrangements by Oscar-winning composer and Art of Noise founder, Anne Dudley.
If We Are Ever, taken from the album, was BBCR1 play-listed in February ’97 shortly before the label’s demise. Virginia then joined the legion of artists recording on own-labels, taking control of the way their music was produced, presented and promoted.

Levers Pulleys & Engines was recorded and produced in Leeds and released in March 2003. A successful campaign drew substantial coverage in the music press, including glowing reviews in Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian and The Sunday Times. Radio support followed, with Bob Harris play-listing on his R2 show as well as 6music and a live session on Tom Robinson’s 6music show. Bob also selected a track for volume 5 of his own renowned compilation series, “Bob Harris Presents”.
Live dates followed and Virginia opened for Judie Tzuke, James Yorkston, Glenn Tilbrook, Bob Geldof, Tom McRae, Delays and a short tour in Ireland opening for Lost Highway artist, Fionn Regan.
Born and raised in Lincolnshire, Virginia is a music graduate of Bretton Hall College, and in addition to her songwriting & performing, has worked as a musician with The Young Vic and contributed to a song-cycle with Michael Nyman. She has also collaborated on projects with Robert Kirby, string arranger on Nick Drake’s Five Leaves Left and Bryter Later.
