Galtres Festival 2008 hailed a great success! For the fourth year running the sun came out for the Galtres Festival and gave us the best day of an otherwise rather damp August. Huby Sports Field hosted this year's event and proved an excellent venue.
Around a thousand people turned up throughout the day and evening - most of them headed straight for the enormous beer and cider tent, then settled in front of the music stage to enjoy the excellent line-up of solo acts and bands performing almost non-stop for 10 hours.
There was loads to do for the children too, with highlights including the metal bashing workshop and the storytelling tent. This year saw the return of the Food Festival with a fine array of tasty local produce, and also a Yorkshire crafts tent for the first time.
All in all the event made around £3000 for local charities - we'll be giving about £750 to St Monica's, the same to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, and dividing the rest up for local organisations including Easingwold Guides and The Samaritans.
Festival director James Houston said: "We'd like to express a huge thanks to everyone involved, to the sponsors, and to Ken Piercey and the sports field committee."

Festival open 11am to 11pm - Sunday 24 August 2008 (the bank holiday weekend)Welcome to the Galtres Festival 2008. We're delighted to have found a great new venue, as we continue to move the Festival around the ancient Forest of Galtres area - and this year we will be subjecting the good people of Huby to an ordeal of loud music, revelry, beer and cider drinking and family entertainment. We've brought it all forwards about a month and are hoping for some hot summer sunshine. We also like the idea of positioning the event right in the middle of a Bank Holiday weekend, when no-one needs to worry too much about getting to work with clear head the next day. Our plans this year are more ambitious that last year, but we're still keeping to our tried and tested formula - 35 or 40 barrels or so of fine North Yorkshire ale and cider, an exciting line-up of acoustic acts and bands on the main stage, and some excellent catering featuring local produce as well as more diverse ethnic food. For the kids and teenagers there will be a full programme of workshops and activities, from metal bashing to video making. All in all a top day out and a right good stomp. We're delighted to welcome some new bands to the Galtres Festival - we've dug out some of the most exciting emerging acts from York and beyond and bring you Joe Solo, Player 1 and JiggaWatt, to name but a few. We've also got some old favourites coming back by popular demand - I don't think we could have a Festival without the wonderful voice of Holly Taymar or the punked-up pop of Jim Bower and Shatner. Check out the music and dance pages for more details about the line-up. We're going to be running a shuttle bus service this year to help get you home, with connections to York, Easingwold, Crayke, Stillington and Sutton. So leave the car at home and enjoy our wonderful range of Yorkshire ales, ciders from all over the country, some interesting new English wines to sample, and the odd cask of lager, mild, stout, porter and pale ale, if that's what whets your whistle! If you'd like to come, sign up via the link on the right and we'll send you details as the programme fills up. Tickets are now on sale via this website or at a couple of local outlets - make sure you get yours before they sell out. |
