FRIDAY 23 TO SUNDAY 25 AUGUST 2013 AT DUNCOMBE PARK, HELMSLEY, NORTH YORKSHIRE
La Bête Blooms
indie / punk / rock /
'This staggeringly youthful Hull quintet caught my eye supporting Club Smith toward the end of 2012 with their grunge-tinged take on alt-rockin’ indie. Drawing together elements of the Pixies and Slowdive, La Bête Blooms hark back to a broad spectrum of 90s alternative music without being in any way a retro act, instead weaving their reference points into something contemporary and fresh.
‘Home’ explores the band’s softer side, and has an aching, dreamy quality, with Daniel Mawer and Rebecca Hopkins interchanging plaintive vocals underpinned by sturdy drumming and a wonderful strolling bassline. As they ponder the prospect of growing old, they find Morrisey-esque solace in the prospect that ‘at least I’ll die with you’. Impressively, they manage it without sounding remotely mopey or mawkish. The fact the song carries a sweet melody and haunting atmosphere certainly counts for a lot.'
