There won't be any funfairs, racing camels or jousting tournaments at this year's event. It's a simple affair. But we're fortunate that in close vicinity there's loads to keep you and the kids entertained - from golf to miniature railways - as well as great woodland trails for walking or biking. See below for examples:
Camp Galtres is right on the edge of a large forest, which combines miles of well-marked hard tracks with loads of small muddy trails. Managed by the Forestry Commission, it's a great place to explore either on foot or on your bike, with routes ranging from easy to ultra-challenging.
So bring your bikes or your boots and explore! Just make sure you find your way back in time to enjoy the music...
Ampleforth College Golf course is located in the nearby village of Gilling East. It is a picturesque nine hole 'pay and play' course which is open to the public.
The original course was constructed in 1960 by the College with the advice of the golf professional at Strensall for the sole use of the College and the Community. The first records of the Golf Club date from around 1972, when Frank Amies, the then licensee at the Fairfax Arms, negotiated an arrangement with Ampleforth College for the local people to use the college course at Gilling Castle.
Enjoy a full day for £15 or £10 for 9 holes. You can wear what you like as long as it’s fairly tidy and your shoes won’t harm the greens or slip on the slopes (trainers are fine in dry weather). Please don’t share a golf bag - the club have some spare bags you can borrow.
Ryedale Miniature Railway
Run by the Ryedale Society of Model Engineers, this is a facinating model railway situated in the village of Gilling just 2.5 miles from Camp Galtres Pop down and have a look for free, or hop on for a passenger ride. See website for lots of information.
The Fairfax Arms
However much we enjoy the charms of a camping trip in lovely countryside, sometimes an hour or three in a good local hostelry can be extremely welcome. If the urge takes you over the Camp Galtres weekend, you won't be disappointed. The Fairfax Arms is the epitome of the traditional country inn: a bar filled with character and atmosphere and a warm and friendly welcome to an excellent quality accommodation. If it's fine you can enjoy sitting outside by the stream in the August sunshine.
It's about 2.5 miles from Camp Galtres and a pleasant stroll through the trees. Visit the website for more ...
